Marriage of convenience is a trope built on strangers agreeing to a life together before they've earned it. Arranged marriage, as Indian romance tells it, is that same premise with the added weight of two families, a set of expectations, and a couple who has to decide, often after the wedding rather than before it, whether any of it can turn into something real.
1. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
Dimple Shah is ready to focus on her career, until her parents suggest the perfect husband. She has no interest in being matched. Rishi has no interest in resisting it. A YA rom-com that plays the culture clash between the two of them for warmth as much as tension.
Why it works: Dimple and Rishi want opposite things from the same arrangement, and watching them meet in the middle is the whole appeal.
2. Dance With Me by Sundari Venkatraman
Bollywood choreographer Rajiv and Inaaya are set up by family friends and feel the pull immediately, but they agree to marry before either of them is sure enough to say how they actually feel. The attraction is instant. The trust takes a lot longer.
Why it works: Getting married before the emotional groundwork is done raises the stakes on every conversation that follows.
3. Along the Lines of Love by Anamika
Nikhil doesn't know what love is but doesn't want to be lonely. Sharanya knows exactly what love is and has decided it's not for her. An arranged marriage brings them together anyway, both of them carrying baggage neither one is in a hurry to unpack.
Why it works: Neither character is looking for a happy ending going in, which makes it land harder when they find one.
4. Hitched by Anamika
An arranged marriage, or maybe a surprise wedding depending on how you count it, that neither party saw leading anywhere. It does anyway, in a light, funny contemporary romance about feelings nobody planned for.
Why it works: The premise doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes the earnest turn in the back half land as a genuine surprise.
